Case Study: Cold Chain Entry and Exit Portal Renovation at a Food Factory

Project Background: Pain Points and Challenges in Cold Chain Logistics

As consumer demands for food safety and quality continue to rise, a food processing company's cold chain logistics system has become a key competitive advantage. The plant identified several critical issues with its existing logistics system, particularly at the cold chain entry and exit portals. Firstly, the traditional manual door operation was inefficient, unable to handle the high volume of goods during peak periods. Secondly, poor sealing at the door edges led to significant loss of cold air, increasing energy consumption and operational costs. Furthermore, the high frequency of personnel entry and exit easily caused air and dust contamination, posing a potential risk to product hygiene. Finally, there was a lack of effective management for incoming and outgoing goods, leading to inaccurate inventory and logistics information. These issues not only impacted production efficiency but also constituted a hidden hazard for food safety management.

Renovation Solution: Building a Modern Cold Chain Portal

Addressing these challenges, the factory collaborated with a professional equipment supplier to comprehensively upgrade the cold chain entry and exit portals. The core of the renovation was the introduction of advanced automated equipment. Firstly, the original standard roll-up doors were replaced with high-performance insulated doors. The door panels used a multi-layer composite structure with an extremely low thermal conductivity. The surface was also coated with a special low-temperature resistant paint, ensuring it would not be damaged by condensation over long-term use. Secondly, an intelligent sensing system was installed, including infrared sensors and microwave radar, which could automatically detect the approach of people and vehicles, enabling contactless door operation. This sensing system not only enhances safety but also avoids energy waste caused by frequent manual door opening and closing. Additionally, the system integrated temperature monitoring capabilities. When the door opens, it automatically activates a fan to expel cold air from the interior and introduces fresh external air, thereby reducing cold air loss. For goods, an automatic weighing and identification system was installed, capable of real-time recording of the quantity and temperature data of incoming and outgoing goods, and automatically updating inventory information. The entire system was also integrated with the factory's ERP system, achieving real-time sharing and traceability of logistics data.

Implementation Results: Enhanced Efficiency and Safety

After the renovation, the efficiency of the plant's cold chain logistics entry and exit portals was significantly improved. According to data, the door's opening and closing speed was about 40% faster than before, and the volume of goods processed increased by nearly 30%. More importantly, the loss of cold air was reduced by about 25%, with substantial annual energy cost savings. At the same time, due to better door sealing, the intrusion of air and dust was greatly reduced, effectively ensuring product hygiene and safety. The application of the intelligent sensing system also reduced the number of times personnel came into contact with the door, lowering the risk of cross-contamination. Furthermore, the automated weighing and identification system made inventory management more precise, reducing the time and errors associated with manual stocktaking. Through this renovation, the food factory successfully built a modern, efficient, and safe cold chain logistics system. It not only improved production efficiency but also enhanced market competitiveness, providing a solid technical guarantee for the full-process quality control of food products.
